Common ALTERNATOR questions
The ‘ALT’ or battery warning light appears, your headlights are dim or flickering, other electronics such as your radio or air conditioning start to play up or your car stalls or has difficulty starting.
Depending on your vehicle type it usually costs between $400-$600 to replace a faulty alternator.
If the car starts you can still drive it, however you’re likely to be limited to the distance drivable. Eventually the car will lose electricals and then stop.
If your car has difficulty starting after the battery has been replaced or fully charged, you likely need a starter motor or have a component failure in your starting system.
The alternate warning light on your cars dashboard often looks like a red battery. If this appears when you’re using multiple electrical features in your car it’s a sign your cars alternator will shortly need replacing.
If your alternator is starting to fail it won’t be producing enough electricity to power everything in your car. If your car experiences erratic symptoms such as headlights dimming or shining extremely brightly then your alternator likely needs replacing.
